2026 World Cup: No MP or Minister of State was sponsored by government – Kofi Adams

Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams has dismissed claims that government officials and political leaders benefited from sponsored trips to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He said the ticket allocation was done without political influence.

His comments come after the government’s free World Cup ticket programme ended. The programme covered only the group stage and did not continue into the knockout stage.

Speaking about concerns over transparency, the Buem MP said no Members of Parliament, ministers, or chief executives were included in the government’s sponsored travel arrangements.

“No Member of Parliament, Minister of State or CEOs were sponsored by government to the World Cup. We did not give any slots to any constituencies,” Adams said in an interview with Sporty FM.

He also responded to concerns from some Ghanaian fans living abroad who expected more people to receive free match tickets during the tournament.

The minister said he was sorry if there had been any misunderstanding about the programme.

“I want to apologise to Ghanaian fans in the diaspora if they didn’t understand us well. They thought everybody who would walk to the stadium would get a ticket from us. We never said so,” he explained.
