53 Nigerians in major sakawa crackdown

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, has announced the arrest of 53 Nigerian nationals following a coordinated cybercrime operation across several parts of the country.

In a statement, the minister said intelligence gathered by the Cyber Security Authority over 48 hours identified suspected cybercrime centres operating in East Legon Hills, Afienya, Kwabenya, Weija, and Tuba.

“Acting on this CSA-led intelligence, a joint team comprising National Security Operations, the Cyber Security Authority, the CID Headquarters, and the Police SWAT conducted coordinated operations on January 16 and 17,” he said.

According to him, nine individuals were arrested as suspects, while 44 others believed to be victims were rescued from the locations. He explained that the rescued individuals were found in apartments using laptop computers.

Sam George disclosed that searches conducted at the various locations led to the retrieval of 52 mobile phones, 62 laptop computers, and two pump-action guns.

“In total, 53 Nigerian nationals were arrested across the various locations,” he said, adding that all those arrested have been profiled and handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for safekeeping and further investigations.

He stressed that the operation forms part of efforts to protect the country’s digital space, stating, “Protecting Ghana’s cyber image internationally is non-negotiable.”
