81 out of 107 major contracts have been sole-sourced – Samson Lardy confronts govt

Ghanaian lawyer Samson Lardy has ‘blown alarm’ about the government’s continued use of sole sourcing, saying 81 out of 107 major contracts have been awarded through the method at a cost of more than GHC73 billion.

Lardy acknowledged the Mahama administration’s procurement reforms and other anti-corruption measures but said there was still “some really dirty stuff” taking place.

“Well, there’s some really dirty stuff that is still going on there, with the big push on sole sourcing, where 81 contracts out of 107 major contracts have been sole-sourced, consuming over GHC73 billion,” he said on JoyNews.

He said the government’s anti-corruption record should therefore not be assessed only by investigations, prosecutions and recoveries, but also by how public procurement is handled.

Lardy’s comments came during his editorial preceding Newsfile, where he assessed the Mahama administration’s first 18 months in office.

He said the government deserved credit in some areas but stressed that the positive assessment should not amount to an unconditional endorsement of its record.
