Our culture must be respected – Assafuah on SHS manual

Vincent Ekow Assafuah says Ghana’s education system must protect national culture and values.

On Newsfile monitored by MyNewsGh, the Old Tafo MP reacted to NaCCA’s withdrawal of a controversial SHS teacher manual. He said the move was good but not enough.

“Our culture and values must be respected,” he said. “We cannot allow any document that goes against what we stand for as a people.”

NaCCA admitted that parts of the Year 2 Physical Education and Health manual on gender identity were not in line with Ghanaian norms.

This followed public backlash and claims by Assin South MP, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, that the government was pushing an LGBTQ agenda in schools.

A revised version of the manual was later released. However, Assafuah believes the problem still exists.

“The revised document still contains definitions that promote things our society does not accept,” he stated. “This is why I am speaking up.”

He urged education authorities to be more careful. “We must ensure that our children are taught values that build the nation, not confuse them,” he added.

Assafuah called on parents, teachers, and religious bodies to also speak up. “This is a national issue. Everyone must pay attention,” he said.
