Ghanaian rapper D-Black has shed light on his managerial role as a record label executive and why one of his ‘prized asset’, Sefa left the label in an interview on Hitz FM monitored by MyNewsGh.
Recalling his 2016 signing project, he mentioned Wisa, Sefa, Darling Gage, and others. Out of five artists, only Sefa became a major star.
“That’s how labels work,” he said. “Not everyone will make it.”
He explained that some artists left because they lacked patience.
Others wanted different creative directions.
“Everybody’s story is different,” he noted.
On his decision not to renew Sefa’s contract after seven years, D-Black was direct.
“It was time for her to grow,” he said. “I don’t believe in signing an artist for ten years.”
In his view, a label is a training ground, not a permanent shelter.
“You should learn, grow, and be ready to stand alone,” he explained.
He also stressed that support does not replace hard work.
“The fact that I’m pushing you doesn’t mean you should sleep,” he warned. “Push like it’s only you.”
