Muammar Gaddafi’s second male child and the heir apparent to his father, Muammar Gaddafi, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi has been confirmed dead.
The late Saif al-Islam Gaddafdi long viewed as the “modern” face of Libya. Educated at the London School of Economics, he initially championed democratic reforms and international rapprochement.
However, his reputation shifted during the 2011 Arab Spring, when he chose to defend his father’s regime against protesters.
Captured by rebels in Zintan following his father’s death, he spent years in detention.
Despite a 2015 death sentence (later overturned) and an outstanding International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant for crimes against humanity, he remains a significant, albeit polarizing, figure in Libyan politics.
