The National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress, Joseph Yamin, has offered insight into the low voter turnout at polling stations during the Ayawaso East by-election.
Speaking from to MyNewsGh from voting centre, Yamin said, “This is a typical Islamic constituency.
“They are in a month of fasting. From 4am they get up to eat, to pray, to do whatever. A lot of them get some rest after their morning prayers.”
He explained that the early hours were a key factor, noting that some residents were still taking a break before heading out to vote.
“If you enter some groups, you find some people still having some bit of a rest before they get out. I think that is the main cause of the low turnout,” he said.
Yamin also highlighted the urban nature of the constituency, where many residents plan to vote around work schedules.
“It’s not a holiday. People think it’s a walking distance or a few minutes drive. They will go to work, do something, then find a time to come and vote and go back,” he added.
