Nine public officers, including five Customs officers, have been arrested in connection with the interception of a large shipment of undeclared Tramadol at the Tema Port.
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) confirmed that the seizure involved a container carrying 146,932,000 tablets of Tramadol Hydrochloride, weighing over 34,800 kilograms. The shipment, which came from the United Arab Emirates, had been declared as household items such as kettles, blenders, irons, and bulbs.
Speaking on the operation, a GRA spokesperson said, “The seizure was triggered by intelligence received by the Preventive wing of the Customs Division. A joint re-examination revealed significant discrepancies, including large quantities of concealed Tramadol tablets.”
The arrested officers include a Narcotics Control Commission officer, a Port Security officer, an Energy Commission officer, a Standards Authority officer, and five Customs officers. All nine are currently on police inquiry bail.
“The importer and declarant have been handed over to the Police to assist with ongoing investigations,” the spokesperson added. “The seized consignment remains under Customs control while investigations continue.”
