SIM registration: Not everyone who owns a smartphone understands the process – Solomon Owusu

United Party (UP) spokesperson Solomon Owusu has expressed concerns over the upcoming SIM re-registration exercise, emphasizing the practical difficulties for citizens.

He pointed out that not everyone owns a smartphone or understands the registration process, often relying on third parties, which can create risks.

“Many people may hand over their data to someone they don’t know, and that’s where the problem lies,” he said.

Owusu also noted that previous exercises had issues, with apps purchased by the government left unaccounted for, forcing citizens to pay fees and repeat processes unnecessarily.

He warned that the re-registration could disrupt systems linked to SIMs, such as vehicle trackers, and urged authorities to secure and streamline the process.

“The responsibility should be on the telecom providers and the agencies, not ordinary citizens,” he concluded.
