Veteran highlife musician Amandzeba has urged Ghanaian musicians to embrace local identity in their music instead of relying heavily on Jamaican patois.
Speaking on Channel One TV, the singer said he has repeatedly raised concerns about the trend, arguing that many listeners struggle to understand some of the expressions used in modern songs.
“I keep telling them, why can’t we use our pidgin English in a way? It always has to do with Jamaican patois and stuff like that,” he said.
According to Amandzeba, music should connect with listeners, and language plays an important role in that connection.
“We don’t even understand. We are jumping up and down,” he stated.
The veteran musician explained that he prefers sharing such views directly with younger artists rather than publicly criticising them.
“It is better you make people experience it than standing there and lecturing them,” he said.
