Employment is not compulsory – Appiah-Kubi defends decision to quit Wontumi case

Lawyer and New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Andy Appiah-Kubi has defended his decision to step down as legal counsel for Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako in his ongoing legal battle linked to alleged illegal mining activities.

Speaking on Joy Prime, Appiah-Kubi said his decision to withdraw from the case should not be seen as forced or unusual, stressing that legal representation is not compulsory.

“Employment is not compulsory,” he said. “If you decide to come out of your employment, I’m not sure there is any rule that will prevent that.”

He explained that his next step would be guided by formal procedures before the court.

“So let’s go to the court and then let me look at this, and then let’s see the results of that application,” he added.

Appiah-Kubi maintained that he would also consider any formal directions from the court before finalising his position.

“I will also consider the position if I’m served one, and then I’ll come back to your interest in my submission,” he said.

He insisted that his withdrawal was in what he believes to be the best interest of his client.

“I think it will serve the best interest of my client if I withdraw from the case,” he stated.
