Prison is Pointless – Lawyer Wants Stolen Funds Back First

A private legal practitioner, Kwame Owusu Danso has questioned Ghana’s heavy reliance on custodial sentencing in financial crime cases.

He argued that the justice system should place stronger emphasis on recovering stolen funds where possible.

Reacting to the ongoing discussions around the plea bargain application in the Exim Bank fraud case involving Chairman Wontumi, he said the possibility of retrieving funds should not be ignored in the pursuit of punishment.

He stated that while imprisonment serves a deterrent purpose, it is not always the most effective outcome in every case.

Kwame Owusu Danso said on GTV, “I think I would prefer that to custodial sentencing.

“Of course, sometimes custodial sentencing is so that it will deter others beyond the person who is involved, others from committing a similar offence.

“But in this case, where it is apparent that there is the possibility of being able to take back the money or some of it, then why not?”
