A private legal practitioner, Kwame Owusu Danso has rejected claims that plea bargaining is designed to protect wealthy or influential suspects.
According to him, that legal tool is available across all level of criminal cases.
Speaking on GTV, he addressed concerns that plea agreements in financial crime cases, including the Exim Bank fraud matter, could be perceived as preferential treatment for the elite.
He dismissed that interpretation, arguing that plea bargaining is a general legal mechanism that applies to different categories of offences, not only high-profile financial crimes.
Kwame Owusu Danso explained, “P-bagging is not only for the rich and the affluent. Everybody can access it.”
To illustrate his point, he referenced petty offences to show the flexibility of negotiated outcomes in the justice system.
He added, “So if someone says I stole a chicken, I can say I’ll give you a chicken bag.”
