IMANI Africa Vice President Kofi Bentil Ghana can develop wetlands responsibly if it adopts technically sound planning and engineering approaches.
He cited the Netherlands as an example of how development can coexist with water management.
“Google how the Dutch tamed the sea. Go to YouTube and type, ‘How the Dutch tamed the sea.’ There are plenty of videos there,” he said on KeyPoints on TV3.
According to Bentil, the issue is not development itself but how it is carried out.
“In the Netherlands, they reclaimed land from the sea and built cities on it. There is a way to do it.”
He added, “Even if you want to have development in those areas, there is compatible use, and if you want to move beyond compatible use to other forms of development, there is a way to do it. It will work.”
