Flood early warning system to enhance prediction accuracy when fully completed – GMet

Dr Eric Asuman, Director-General of the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), has outlined the roles of key institutions involved in the Accra Flood Early Warning System under the GARID project.

He explained that the system is structured to ensure different agencies handle specific aspects of flood management, from forecasting to response.

“To forecast rainfall is our job. Determining floods is the Hydrological Authority’s work. NADMO then uses that information to identify flood-prone areas and respond,” he said on Asempa FM.

According to him, the project is expected to improve accuracy in forecasting once all equipment and systems are fully deployed.

“The project is World Bank funded. GMet doesn’t handle the money.

“The GARID Secretariat has direct access to the funding,” he added.

Dr Asuman said the integration of new equipment and software would strengthen data sharing between agencies and improve early warning capabilities for flood-prone communities in Accra.
