GMet has no access to GARID funds — Director-General clarifies agency role

Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) does not receive or manage funds under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project, according to its Director-General, Dr Eric Asuman.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, he stressed that the agency’s role in the project is strictly technical.

“GMet doesn’t have any account, doesn’t receive any money under GARID. We are just partners telling them what we want,” he said.

Dr Asuman explained that the GARID project supports GMet with equipment and digital systems to improve weather and flood monitoring.

He noted that rainfall measurement tools and software integration systems had been provided to improve coordination between agencies.

“GARID has procured a reader for us to determine the volume of rainfall.

“They have also developed a software to integrate GMet data and the Hydrological Authority,” he said.

He added that GMet’s mandate remains focused on weather forecasting, while flood modelling is handled by the Ghana Hydrological Authority, with NADMO using the information for response planning.
