President of the Chamber of Local Governance, Richard Fiadomor, says regional ministers should not be directly leading demolition exercises, arguing that the responsibility rests with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
Speaking on Joy News during a discussion on the National General Cleaning Day exercise, Mr Fiadomor said demolition activities are part of development control, a function assigned to local assemblies.
“Regional ministers should not be seen leading demolition exercises, which is a development control issue, for it to be performed by the assemblies,” he said.
According to him, the role of Regional Coordinating Councils is to supervise and coordinate the work of assemblies rather than carry out enforcement activities.
“The job of the RCCs is to supervise, coordinate, and make sure that the activities of the MMDAs are properly coordinated. But you see them getting involved in development control,” he stated.
Mr Fiadomor said the current practice blurs the distinction between the responsibilities of regional authorities and local assemblies.
He maintained that development control should remain the responsibility of the assemblies in accordance with their mandate.
