Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has backed Sammi Awuku’s call for President John Mahama not to pursue another presidential term, regardless of how the Supreme Court rules on a pending constitutional case.
His comments came after former NPP National Organiser Sammi Awuku argued that President Mahama should reject what he described as a “trap” and retire in 2029 instead of seeking another term.
The discussion follows a lawsuit filed by journalist and lawyer Kenneth Agyei Kuranchie, a former NPP parliamentary aspirant, who is asking the Supreme Court to reinterpret Article 66(2) of the 1992 Constitution.
Kuranchie argues that the constitutional two-term limit applies only to presidents who serve two consecutive four-year terms and that a break of one full electoral cycle should reset a former president’s eligibility to contest again. If the court accepts that interpretation, it could affect discussions around Mahama’s future eligibility.
Responding to Awuku’s post, Manasseh wrote:
“Whichever way the Supreme Court rules, President Mahama must not fall for the ruinous trap being set by THOSE BEHIND the suits.”
