Former Ghana High Commissioner to India, Mike Oquaye Jnr, has questioned the government’s decision to extradite Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, while legal proceedings relating to his case were still before the courts.
Oquaye Jnr said he believes the timing of the extradition raises questions that require an official explanation.
“Why the rush? Maybe there is a particular reason. We need an explanation from the government for that,” he said on The Key Points on TV3 on Saturday, July 11.
Oquaye Jnr argued that the extradition should have waited until all pending court matters had been concluded.
“Even though this matter is still pending in our court of competent jurisdiction, he has been shipped away. I don’t think this is right,” he stated.
Drawing a comparison with the United States, he added that he does not believe American authorities would extradite one of their own citizens while legal proceedings were still ongoing.
“I don’t think America will ship their citizens when matters are pending in court,” he said.
His comments come after Abu Trica was extradited to the United States on Thursday, July 9, 2026, following an Accra High Court ruling approving his surrender to face charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy.
