Former Abuakwa North aspirant explains why NPP expected Wontumi case to be adjourned

Senior New Patriotic Party (NPP) member and former Abuakwa North parliamentary primaries aspirant, Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has revealed why members of Chairman Wontumi’s legal and political team did not expect the Accra High Court to deliver judgment on July 20 because of pending legal applications.

Speaking on Joy Prime, Dr Boakye-Danquah said they anticipated that the court would adjourn the matter after Wontumi’s lawyers filed applications they believed required determination before judgment.

“We were very expectant that, as we had always gone into court and come out, Monday, July 20, was going to be the same,” he said.

According to him, one of the applications sought an interpretation from the Supreme Court on a constitutional issue, while another requested an adjournment because one of the lawyers was unavailable.

“His lawyer had filed two significant applications. Amongst them was an interpretation of an aspect of the Constitution by the Supreme Court,” he said.

Dr Boakye-Danquah argued that, in his view, the trial court had sufficient time to postpone proceedings pending the outcome of those applications.

“The judge could have accepted the adjournment. We had Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and the whole of next week,” he stated.

He maintained that the pending Supreme Court proceedings were the main reason they believed judgment would not be delivered that day.

“Based on the interpretation at the Supreme Court, we knew that Monday was not supposed to be the judgment day because the judge would uphold the law and wait for his superior at the Supreme Court,” he said.
