There are three truths whenever a politician is jailed – Prof. Antwi

Governance expert and policy analyst Prof. Enoch Antwi has revealed that public debate over the conviction of politicians is often shaped by political affiliation rather than a shared understanding of the facts.

Speaking on TV3, Prof. Antwi said every high-profile conviction tends to generate competing narratives from the country’s two major political parties and the wider public.

“Anytime a politician is jailed, we have three truths. We have the truth of the MPP, the truth of the NDC and then the truth of those who are on the side of reality,” he said.

According to him, such situations highlight the need for greater civility and responsible citizenship in national discourse.

Drawing on what he described as his “seven Cs” of leadership, Prof. Antwi said the principles of “controversy with civility” and “citizenship” become especially important whenever politically exposed persons are prosecuted.

He argued that disagreements over court decisions should not prevent citizens from examining the facts of each case objectively.

Prof. Antwi also urged political communicators to explain legal proceedings in a way that ordinary Ghanaians can understand instead of allowing partisan narratives to dominate public discussion.

“I think those who are communicating for each political party should do well to explain it to the level of anybody on the street who can understand,” he stated.
