Parents chasing money are leaving children to be raised by friends – Adams Karim laments

President of the Mandela Washington Fellows Association of Ghana, Ewura Adams Karim, has urged parents to spend more time raising their children, warning that an excessive focus on making money could leave children under the influence of their peers.

Karim said many parents are working hard to provide the best for their children but are neglecting their responsibility to guide them.

“Today every parent is chasing money. Every parent is chasing, ‘I want my kids to have the best of life,’” he said on GTV.

He cautioned that children who receive little attention at home are more likely to seek acceptance and guidance from their friends.

“If you are out of the house from 5:00 in the morning and come back by midnight, they will find respite in their friends,” he stated.

According to Karim, this can result in parents losing influence over their children.

“They become the advisors of the child. They determine what the child does and what the child does not do, and you as the parent have absolutely no control over your child anymore,” he said.

Karim added that parents in such situations may fail to notice changes in their children’s behaviour because they are rarely present.

“So whatever they are doing, you don’t know. You’re unable to identify any changes whatsoever with the child, and that in itself becomes a challenge,” he added.
