Don’t raise your children like Christmas chickens – Journalist tells parents

Ghanaian journalist and President of the Mandela Washington Fellows Association of Ghana, Ewura Adams Karim, has called on parents to focus on building the character of their children rather than only providing for their material needs.

Speaking on parenting, Karim said raising children requires more than ensuring they are comfortable.

“You don’t bring up your kids like you are raising chickens or goats for Christmas,” he said on GTV.

He explained that while animals are fed to prepare them for a specific purpose, children should be nurtured to become responsible adults.

“When you’re raising chickens or goats for Christmas, you feed them every day because you want them to grow. That’s not how you bring up kids,” he stated.

Karim said parents should instead prepare their children to reflect the values of their families.

“When you’re bringing up kids, you are bringing them up to come and represent you in future. So when they go somewhere and somebody sees the child, there is some sort of respect that you gain,” he said.

He stressed that good parenting should be measured not only by what parents provide but also by the values and guidance they pass on to their children.
