Hours after the NPP called for the removal of Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu over the proposed introduction of Arabic and Chinese into Ghanaian schools, his Press Secretary, Hashmin Mohammed, has clarified that the recommendations have not yet become government policy.
Hashmin said the proposals originated from the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) and remain subject to the required approval process.
“The recommendations originated from NaCCA and are still going through the required approval process,” he said on Citi FM.
His clarification follows the NPP’s claim that the Education Ministry and NaCCA had already taken steps towards implementing the initiative without presidential or Cabinet approval.
Hashmin defended the minister’s decision to communicate the recommendations, questioning what was wrong with presenting proposals that were still being considered.
“If the Honourable Minister communicated the recommendations of NaCCA, what is wrong with that?” he asked.
He said the Education Ministry was following the established process for considering curriculum changes and that the recommendations would have to pass through the relevant institutional and governmental stages before implementation.
