Nigerian media personality Tomike Adeoye has criticised parents who make their children’s nannies wear uniforms when they go out with the family.
Tomike said she finds the practice humiliating, especially when the parents and children are dressed up for social events while the nanny is visibly dressed as a domestic worker.
“I can never wrap my head around people who go out with their children’s nannies wearing their uniforms. I find it very humiliating. It’s giving, ‘I’m a nanny,’” she said in an Instagram post.
She said the practice becomes more noticeable at parties where parents are dressed up and their children are also well dressed.
“Especially when you’re at a party and you’re looking all glammed up, your kids are looking so cute, and then you have their nannies wearing uniforms,” she added.
Tomike said she treats her nannies as part of her family because they take care of her children when she is away.
“As long as you’re taking care of my child, looking after that child in my absence, you have become my family,” she said.
She also shared an experience involving one of her nannies, who she said once told her boyfriend that even her employer could not speak to her disrespectfully.
“My husband once heard one of my nannies telling her boyfriend, ‘Even my madam cannot speak to me like that. Even my madam cannot call me names,’” Tomike recalled.
She said she considered the nanny’s attitude towards herself a sign that she had positively influenced her.
“I said, ‘Clock.’ If you will come to my home and become more self-aware, then I have made a positive impact in your life. Life is not that hard,” she said.
