The tables will always turn – Martin Kpebu reacts to lawyer Awuah’s arrest drama

Lawyer Martin Kpebu has warned political authorities to be careful about how they deploy security agencies against political opponents, following the confrontation involving Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah at the Accra High Court.

Kpebu said the manner in which the MP was reportedly handled should concern politicians because no party remains in power permanently.

He argued that political parties could eventually find themselves on the opposite side of the same actions they support while in government.

“No party can stay in office forever. So, the tables will always turn,” he told Joy News.

Kpebu referred to previous political changes in Ghana and argued that parties in government should remember how voters have responded to perceived abuses of power.

“It was just yesterday we drove out Akufo-Addo and the PPP because of such matters. PPNDC comes and they are repeating the same, is that so? Then they should know how Ghanaians will react,” he said.

His comments followed a reported confrontation at the Accra High Court after security personnel believed to be from EOCO attempted to stop Awuah from leaving the court premises. The circumstances surrounding the encounter and whether the officers were attempting to arrest him remain unclear.

Kpebu said the incident should prompt a broader discussion about the way security agencies deal with MPs and political opponents.

He maintained that democratic safeguards should not depend on which party controls government because political power can change hands.
