GNAT outlines next steps after teacher unions suspend strike

GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah says teacher unions will continue negotiating with the government until their outstanding demands are addressed, despite suspending their strike.

“The issues have not been completed. Negotiations have not ended or concluded. Let me put it, not concluded. And so we’ll continue to negotiate until all the issues are done,” he told Eyewitness News on Friday, October 9, 2026.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers’ Association of Ghana (PRETAG) suspended their strike after engagements with the Council of State and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.

The unions began the industrial action on September 25 over outstanding issues involving promotions, conditions of service and allowances.

Under commitments reached during the negotiations, promotion-related arrears are expected to be paid to 51,000 teachers by October 16, with the remaining payments due by the end of the month.

The digital support allowance is scheduled for November, while the continuous professional development allowance is expected in December. Implementation of the deprived-area allowance is expected to begin in January 2027, with the payment arrangements to be determined by November or December this year.
