Ghanaian counsellor and marriage expert Frank Edem Adofoli says marriage should be a partnership that supports both partners’ happiness and personal growth, not a relationship that leaves either person feeling trapped or controlled.
Speaking on Changes on Joy Prime, Adofoli said a healthy marriage should allow couples to love and support each other while maintaining their individuality.
“Marriage is supposed to be a partnership between two people who love each other,” he said, adding that partners should support each other’s personal growth as well as their relationship.
He noted that although marriage should make life better, some couples experience the opposite, feeling restricted instead of loved and cared for.
Adofoli stressed that marriage does not require partners to abandon their individual interests, careers or hobbies to satisfy each other.
“You have your life, I have my life. We are doing life together. I’m not changing you to become me and I’m also not becoming you,” he said.
He added that couples should build relationships around what works for them rather than allowing outside expectations to dictate how they live.
