Kwesi Pratt accuses NPP, NDC of double standards over EC appointments

Seasoned journalist Kwesi Pratt has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of inconsistency in their positions on appointing people with known political affiliations to the Electoral Commission (EC).

He said both parties had criticised such appointments when in opposition but had failed to uphold the same standards when given the opportunity to appoint officials.

Mr Pratt cited the appointment of a former NPP communicator, Appiahene, to the Electoral Commission under an NPP administration, despite public criticism over his political background.

“Given that history, the NPP has no locus in opposing a similar practice by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or the President Mahama administration,” he said on Metro TV.

He also recalled the NDC’s criticism of appointments involving people who had openly declared allegiance to the NPP, arguing that the party had now adopted a similar approach.

“I’m very surprised that the very people who criticised the NPP have done exactly what the New Patriotic Party did,” he said.

Mr Pratt said the controversy showed that neither party had given sufficient importance to consistency and principle in decisions concerning the composition of the election management body.
