World Cup visa scandal: Norgbey says committee must establish who was behind the letters

Youth and Sports Committee Chairman Ernest Norgbey has questioned whether individuals implicated in the 2026 World Cup visa scandal acted independently, suggesting that any established financial relationships could point to a wider arrangement.

Norgbey said claims that letters were issued on official letterheads and signed by particular individuals raised questions that investigators would need to clarify.

“If really what you are saying is true, then, as I said earlier, there’s a financial relationship. Therefore, those people cannot be acting on their own capacity,” he said.

Norgbey stressed that the committee would need to hear from the people involved to establish the facts and determine the extent of their roles in the alleged visa-related dealings.

“These are the reasons why probably, when we invite the various individuals, we will get to the bottom of it,” he said on Joy News.

The committee chairman’s comments suggest that establishing who authorised the letters, the circumstances under which they were issued and whether financial arrangements were involved could be important to understanding the scandal.

He also said the committee had requested further information from the Sports Minister after an earlier engagement but had yet to receive some of the documents.

Norgbey maintained that the priority should be to identify those responsible for wrongdoing and ensure they face the appropriate consequences.
