President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to invest $2 billion annually in sectors with high job-creation potential under a new economy programme scheduled for launch in 2027.
Mahama said the initiative would target agriculture and irrigation, agro-processing, pharmaceutical enclaves, renewable energy and tourism, among other sectors, to create employment opportunities for young Ghanaians.
“Next year, things are going to get even faster, because we are launching the new economy programme,” he said during a tour of industrial facilities.
“The new economy programme is a programme where we invest $2 billion every year in sectors that are rich with job creation,” he added.
The President said the investment would support businesses and industries capable of generating more jobs and expanding economic opportunities across the country.
His announcement came during a visit to the Bright Industrial Complex, where he observed the expansion of factories and the employment of young people working in shifts.
“This is what we talk about when we say the 24-hour economy. It is beginning to show the job creation aspect of it,” he said.
Mahama also highlighted the role of women in the growing industrial sector, noting that they made up more than 90% of the workforce in textile and garment factories he visited.
