Rashid Tanko Computer, Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has rejected attempts to equate Emelia Affi Agbenyo’s support for the party during the 2024 elections with formal NDC membership.
Tanko argued that participating in a political campaign or supporting a party’s electoral efforts does not necessarily make someone a registered member or a committed party activist.
He said formal membership could be verified through the party’s records, including its branch structures across the country.
“We hold the party data,” he said, adding that membership involved registration at a branch.
Tanko maintained that Agbenyo had contributed to the NDC’s 2024 campaign because of her expertise in governance and her desire to see a change in government, rather than as a conventional party activist.
“She came in and supported her. We made her because of her expertise in governance and all that internationally,” he said on TV3 during a zoom interview.
He argued that people with professional expertise and independent views should be able to support political campaigns without automatically being labelled party members.
Tanko also cited other professionals who had supported political parties in particular areas of work, arguing that such involvement did not necessarily establish formal party affiliation.
