Where was CODEO? Rashid Tanko questions election observers over past EC controversies

Rashid Tanko Computer, Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of applying different standards to Electoral Commission appointments, arguing that previous controversies over the removal of commissioners were politically motivated.

Tanko said the NPP had questioned the neutrality of EC officials while in opposition, but failed to apply the same scrutiny to appointments made when it assumed power.

He cited the removal of the former EC Chairperson Charlotte Osei and her deputies, describing the allegations against them as politically motivated.

“These were trumped-up charges against her,” Tanko said, referring to Osei.

He argued that the removal of the commissioners marked an unprecedented development in Ghana’s electoral administration since 1992, adding that the process raised questions about the political neutrality of subsequent appointments.

Tanko also referred to the NPP’s previous criticism of EC appointments, arguing that the party had itself appointed people he considered politically aligned with it.

He questioned CODEO’s response to earlier controversies, asking why it had not raised similar objections at the time.

“Where was CODEO?” he asked during a zoom interview on TV3.

Tanko maintained that President Mahama had been consistent in his approach to EC appointments and rejected the argument that Agbenyo’s appointment should be treated differently because of her support for the NDC.
