It is the perception, not her competence – Kwakye Ofosu on Abenyo’s EC appointment

Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu has said the controversy surrounding Emelia Afi Abenyo’s appointment as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission is centred on perceptions about her political affiliation rather than her ability to perform the job.

He said the concern raised by critics was whether Abenyo’s alleged association with the governing NDC could affect public confidence in the EC.

He distinguished between her competence and the perception her appointment might create, arguing that the two issues should not be treated as the same.

“It is the perception that her association with the NDC creates in this appointment that has been made that is of concern, not so much about her competence,” he said.

Kwakye Ofosu acknowledged that the public would have to wait to see how Abenyo performed before drawing conclusions about her political neutrality.

“Only time will resolve that. Only time will resolve that,” he added.

He argued that a public official’s political background did not automatically mean the person would act in a partisan manner. He cited an opposition-affiliated official whom he said had demonstrated maturity and balance in the performance of his duties.

Kwakye Ofosu also maintained that Abenyo had the temperament required for the position, describing her as someone who was not naturally inclined to be excessively partisan.

His comments were made during an interview on TV3’s Keypoints on Saturday, October 17, 2026, amid the NPP’s concerns about Abenyo’s alleged membership of the NDC.
