Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, has asked critics of Emelia Afi Abenyo’s appointment as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) to allow her to work before judging her political neutrality.
He said concerns about Abenyo’s perceived association with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) should not automatically determine how she is assessed, arguing that her conduct in office would provide a fairer basis for judging her.
Speaking on TV3’s Keypoints on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Kwakye Ofosu acknowledged that the appointment had raised concerns but insisted that Abenyo deserved an opportunity to demonstrate her ability to perform the role impartially.
“The only way you can assess her realistically and fairly is to let her work. Let her comment. Let her act. Then you tell whether that political bias has influenced the outcome,” he said.
He pointed to the conduct of another public official, whom he described as a member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), as an example of why political affiliation alone should not determine public perception.
Kwakye Ofosu said the government had been full of praise for the official’s maturity and balance despite his political association, arguing that similar patience should be extended to Abenyo.
“But this lady, and I know her very well, her natural temperament is not to be rabid and overly partisan. So let us allow her some scope to operate. Let us see how that goes,” he added.
This is on the back of NPP’s criticism, which has questioned whether Abenyo’s NDC affiliation makes her suitable for a senior position at an institution responsible for managing Ghana’s elections.
