Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) Managing Director Edmond Kombat has outlined plans to expand the refinery’s capacity to 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day as management looks beyond its current recovery efforts.
Speaking during his remarks on TOR’s recovery, Kombat said the refinery’s return to operations was only one part of a broader plan to increase its capacity and strengthen its role in Ghana’s petroleum industry.
He explained that management was considering further investments to position the refinery for larger-scale operations, including proposed greenfield and brownfield projects.
“We cannot stop at where we are today,” Kombat’s expansion vision suggests, as TOR looks towards a future in which it can process significantly more crude oil and contribute more to Ghana’s fuel supply.
The proposed expansion would mark a major step beyond the refinery’s current capacity, with the long-term target set at 100,000 barrels per day. Achieving that goal would require substantial investment, infrastructure development and careful planning.
Kombat’s plans also extend beyond the refinery’s processing facilities. His remarks included projects involving a hospital and housing, pointing to management’s wider development agenda alongside efforts to restore and expand TOR’s core operations.
The expansion agenda comes as the refinery works to rebuild its operational capacity after years of difficulty. Management’s immediate focus has been on restoring refining activities, maintaining equipment and improving the facility’s ability to handle crude oil.
The proposed projects would represent the next stage of that effort, with the ultimate aim of making TOR a stronger player in Ghana’s energy sector.
However, the target of 100,000 barrels per day remains an expansion ambition rather than an indication that the refinery is already operating at that level. Its realisation will depend on the investments and developments required to take the facility from recovery to large-scale expansion.
