DStv price reductions to support anti-piracy drive – Sam George

Communications Minister Sam George has said the latest DStv price reductions will provide a basis for the government to intensify its crackdown on content piracy, with the next phase expected to begin on November 5, subject to clearance following the Attorney-General’s opinion.

He said the lower subscription prices would make paid content more accessible and strengthen the case for tackling piracy.

Sam George cited packages costing Ghc50 a month for access to 90 channels and Ghc100 for more than 120 channels, while the Ghc250 package offers sports, news and entertainment content.

“At Ghc50 a month, you have access to content. Ghc50 a month is less than two cedis a day for 90 channels,” he said.

He added that the Ghc100 package provides access to more than 120 channels for just over Ghc3 a day, while the Ghc250 package offers a wider selection of content, including sports.

“At Ghc250, which gives you basically all the sports, news and entertainment, I think that this represents real value,” he said.

The minister said the government intended to begin a “massive clampdown on anti-piracy” from November 5, once the necessary clearance had been obtained.

He said the price reductions followed engagements with MultiChoice and Canal+ that began in June the previous year.

Sam George said the government was grateful for the companies’ cooperation and believed the new pricing structure provided a stronger basis for addressing piracy.
