Afenyo-Markin has made himself difficult to remove as Minority Leader – Ebo Buckman

United Party Deputy Director of Communications Ebo Buckman says Alexander Afenyo-Markin has positioned himself politically in a way that makes it difficult for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remove him as Minority Leader, despite alleged opposition to his leadership style.

Buckman said Afenyo-Markin had taken deliberate steps to strengthen his position within the party, making his potential removal politically costly, particularly in the Central Region.

“He’s positioned himself in a way that will be difficult for the party to touch him, even though they really want to touch him and they know the effect it could have in Central Region,” he said.

He argued that the situation had left the NPP in a position where it might have to retain a leader it was unhappy with because of the political consequences of replacing him.

“So it’s like you don’t like something but it’s difficult for you to touch it, so you are forced to like it,” Buckman said.

He also pointed to Afenyo-Markin’s recent efforts to mobilise supporters, including visits from people who sang and danced in his support, as part of what he described as a strategy to strengthen his position.

“At the point he said the people said they are untouchable,” Buckman said.

Buckman maintained that Afenyo-Markin had played his political cards carefully as discussions about a possible change in the Minority leadership continued.
