The Accra High Court has postponed its ruling on who has the authority to organise the funeral of highlife legend Daddy Lumba. The decision will now be delivered on Friday, December 12.
The dispute was brought by members of the late musician’s maternal family, who claim that under Akan custom, only the maternal lineage has the right to take custody of his remains and manage funeral arrangements. Other relatives contest this claim.
During proceedings, both sides presented arguments on legal and traditional authority. The court did not issue a verdict, opting to adjourn until Friday to make a final determination on custody of the body, management of any memorial fund, and funeral oversight.
Kweku Emmanuel Debrah, representing the Family Head and first defendant, said the family respects the court’s decision.
“We are all waiting for the court, which has the final say. Whatever they decide, we will abide by it and work together as a family,” he said.
Highlife musician Papa Shee, who attended court in support of the applicants, expressed confidence in the outcome.
“We are glad the judge listened to the lawyers. I know that there will be victory,” he stated.
