Airport businessman found dead after gunshot incident

A Ghanaian businessman named Fred Akowuah has died from a gunshot wound at his home in Airport Residential Area, prompting an investigation by the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to determine whether he shot himself or was shot by another person.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, with detectives working to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.

According to information from police and family sources cited by *The Chronicle*, Akowuah and his wife had been separated after 15 years of marriage. The couple, who met in the United States, have a 12-year-old son.

The report stated that their marriage had faced challenges, with family sources linking some of the disagreements to Akowuah having an eight-year-old daughter from outside the marriage.

On the day of the incident, Akowuah and his estranged wife reportedly met at their matrimonial home near the Association International School following an agreement to discuss their differences.

A short while after the meeting, a gunshot was heard, and one of the people in the house reportedly contacted Akowuah’s sibling to inform the family of his death.

A Crime Scene Management Team from the CID Headquarters, including fingerprint specialists, photographers and ballistic experts, was later deployed to examine the scene.

A post-mortem examination was conducted at the Police Hospital in Accra, and Akowuah was buried on June 25.

Family sources explained that the burial arrangement followed Akan traditional practice, which they said allows for burial after such circumstances when parents lose a child for the first time.

The CID continues to investigate the case to establish the exact circumstances that led to Fred Akowuah’s death.
