Akufo-Addo was in charge, not Bawumia – NAPO

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has rejected claims that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is weak or unable to take firm decisions.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the former Education Minister said such views misunderstand how power works under Ghana’s Constitution.

“The Vice President does not have the final authority to take executive decisions. That power belongs to the President,” he explained.

He said even when Dr. Bawumia served for eight years as head of the Economic Management Team, he could not act independently.

“People forget that he was not the President. He could make recommendations, but he could not approve policies on his own,” Dr. Opoku Prempeh stated.

According to him, it is unfair to judge Dr. Bawumia’s leadership strength based on that role.

“You cannot say someone is weak when he has never been given full control to lead,” he said.

He added that many of Dr. Bawumia’s ideas, especially in digitalization and innovation, are still supporting government work.

“Some of the systems we rely on today came from his vision,” he noted.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh also said leadership in modern times is driven by ideas and practical solutions.

“In today’s world, leadership is about innovation, and that is what he brings,” he said.

He ended by calling for patience from critics.

“Let him be given the chance first. Then people can judge him fairly,” he added.
