Asamoah Gyan Reveals Depression, Encourages Others to Speak

Ghana’s all-time leading scorer Asamoah Gyan disclosed on Wednesday that he battled depression about a year ago, using his platform to encourage others facing mental health difficulties to seek support. He made the revelation during his unveiling as an ambassador of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) at the Pelican Hotel in Accra.

“About a year ago, I had problems which led to depression,” Gyan said at the ceremony.

The event honoured Gyan’s contribution to Ghana football and formally launched his role in supporting the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup, to be held across North America.

Gyan holds the national record of 51 goals for the Black Stars and represented Ghana at three successive World Cups in 2006, 2010 and 2014. He scored the country’s first-ever World Cup goal against the Czech Republic during the 2006 tournament in Germany.

As ambassador, he will lead fan engagement initiatives, promotional campaigns and official representation duties as the GFA builds toward the global tournament. Youth football development also forms part of his mandate.

Former players, football administrators, corporate partners and journalists attended the ceremony.
