‘Ashawo’ taking over Bolgatanga – Regional Minister laments increasing prostitution

The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri, has bemoaned the increasing prevalence of prostitution in Bolgatanga, capital of the Upper East Region.

For him, the fact that prostitution is becoming a common practice, with commercial sex workers openly plying their trade, is worrying.

Speaking today at this year’s Eid-ul-fitr Prayers in Bolgatanga, organised by the Muslim community, Hon Akamugri expressed frustration at the growing moral decadence in general, particularly prostitution and substance abuse, noting that they pose a grave danger to the youth of the region.

“…As we celebrate, we must remain mindful of emerging social challenges within our communities; the rising moral decadence, particularly the growing incidence of commercial sex activity in the regional capital as well as substance abuse, poses a serious threat to the well-being and future of our youth,” Hon Akamugri stated.

Commercial sex work is noticeably popular in the municipality, especially with female Nigerian sex workers visibly involved in the trade. There are known brothels in the heart of town, where patrons go to enjoy the services of these sex workers.

A particularly notorious brothel, populated with mainly Nigerian prostitutes, is referred to, in whispers as Akolbila bar. This brothel operates 24/7 with patronage peaking at night.

Beyond the capital, other district capitals have had increasing numbers of commercial sex workers, according to residents.
