AU Summit: Our destiny is in our hands – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has said the era of Africans always begging is over, stating that our collective destiny lies in our hands.

“The world is at an inflection point. Africa cannot sit just as a quiet victim with cup in hand begging nations to change their minds.

“Africa has to take its destiny into its own hands,” he said while addressing leaders at the African Union summit.

According to him, African nations to reposition themselves in what he described as a rapidly shifting global order, warning that the continent must move beyond dependency and assert its strategic interests.

Mahama said the international system established after World War II is facing significant strain, with growing nationalism, declining development assistance, and shifting geopolitical alliances reshaping global dynamics.

He further argued that reduced humanitarian aid and overseas development support signal a broader trend of countries prioritizing domestic interests over multilateral commitments.

“We want the Global South to be positioned at the table when a new global order is being rolled out,” he said.
