NPP communicator Awal Mohammed has argued that public claims linking Chairman Wontumi to illegal mining are inconsistent with statements that have emerged during court proceedings and positions previously expressed by former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Speaking on Joy Prime, Mohammed said accusations that Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, was personally engaged in galamsey have not been supported by developments in court.
“President Akufo-Addo was on record saying he was not engaged in galamsey,” Mohammed stated.
He further pointed to what he said were remarks made during legal proceedings.
“Even in court, it emerged that they never accused him of engaging in galamsey.”
According to Mohammed, many political opponents repeatedly alleged before the 2024 elections that Wontumi was directly involved in illegal mining activities.
“Almost everyone in this country before the elections was saying that Wontumi was engaged in galamsey.”
He argued that the discussion should be guided by facts presented through official processes rather than assumptions made in the political arena.
Mohammed maintained that if evidence exists against any individual, the law should be allowed to take its course, but public debate should remain consistent with what has been established through investigations and court proceedings.
