Bawumia would ‘whip’ any candidate NDC presents – Fatimatu Abubakar

Former Minister for Information and NPP member Fatimatu Abubakar has rejected projections suggesting that the NDC’s candidate would be in a strong position if a national election were held immediately, arguing that the candidate was not even popular among some members of his own party.

Speaking on TV3’s Keypoints, Abubakar said she disagreed with the projection because, in her view, it did not reflect the mood on the ground or the concerns being expressed by NDC supporters.

She claimed that some party members had been publicly complaining about their difficulties, while others were unhappy with how government business was being handled.

“The foot soldiers themselves are on social media every day crying. Multiple videos talking about their struggles, and these are the people who are going to select who becomes the flagbearer even in the internal elections,” she said.

Abubakar argued that the candidate’s alleged lack of support within the NDC could make it difficult to secure votes beyond the party when the national elections arrive.

“Amongst them, the candidate is not even popular, not to think of even offloading him to those of us at the base who will be voting in the national elections,” she said.

She also cited concerns among teachers, doctors and nurses, as well as issues involving school infrastructure, as reasons she believed voters could turn against the candidate.

“These are the people who are going to vote,” she said, arguing that their experiences should be taken into account when assessing the candidate’s electoral prospects.

Abubakar went further to state that she believed voters would choose former Vice President and NPP figure Dr Mahamudu Bawumia over the NDC candidate.

“I do not believe that any well-informed, reasonable, right-thinking Ghanaian will go to the polls to vote for someone who will work to their disadvantage,” she said.

“I believe, based on the record, they are going to select Dr Bawumia any day over the said candidate.”
