A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Team and lecturer at Spiritan University College, Frank Acheampong, has argued that it is unfair to hold President John Dramani Mahama solely responsible for the recurring flooding in Accra, insisting that the problem is the result of years of leadership failures.
Speaking on Angel FM in Kumasi, Mr. Acheampong said successive governments have failed to implement lasting measures to address the perennial flooding challenge.
“People blaming Mahama for the cause of this flooding do not know what they are saying,” he stated.
He claimed that the previous administration missed an opportunity to reduce flooding by failing to undertake major drainage works.
“If Cecilia Dapaah had used the US$42 million allocated to her to desilt the Odaw River, the flooding would not have been as severe as it is today,” he alleged.
Mr. Acheampong noted that flooding in Accra has been a longstanding problem that predates the current administration.
“It is a known fact that Accra floods whenever it rains, so every successive government must answer what it has done to solve the problem,” he said.
He therefore called for shared responsibility, arguing that both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) should accept blame for the country’s recurring flooding crisis.
“So, both political parties must be blamed,” he asserted.
Mr. Acheampong urged political leaders to adopt a more proactive approach to flood prevention instead of assigning blame whenever disasters occur.
“We need to be proactive as a country for once,” he added.
