The Ghana cedi emerged as Africa’s top-performing currency in 2025, Bloomberg data shows.
Over the year, the cedi gained nearly 40% against the US dollar, outpacing all other African currencies.
Following the cedi, the Congolese franc and Zambian kwacha ranked second and third, while the South African rand also posted solid gains.
This turnaround comes after years of pressure on the cedi and is credited to measures such as domestic gold-buying programs, fiscal adjustments under the IMF, and stabilising global markets.
Ethiopia’s birr, in contrast, saw the largest depreciation against the dollar.
Financial analyst Dr. Theo Acheampong highlighted the achievement on social media, writing, “Most African currencies performed well against the dollar in 2025, but the CEDI was the star performer at almost 40% y/y appreciation, followed by the Congolese franc, Zambian Kwacha and SA Rand in that order.”
