Brahim Díaz sets African World Cup record

Brahim Díaz made history as Morocco beat co-hosts Canada 3-0 in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Real Madrid midfielder provided two assists in Houston to take his total to four in the tournament.

He now holds the record for the most assists by an African player in the men’s FIFA World Cup. His performance also helped Morocco become the first African country to reach back-to-back World Cup quarter-finals.

The first half ended without a goal. Morocco also suffered an early blow after Ismael Saibari went off injured. After the break, Walid Regragui’s team took control of the match, with Díaz leading the attack with his passing and vision.

Five minutes into the second half, Azzedine Ounahi scored to give Morocco the lead. In the 82nd minute, Díaz played a perfect pass through the Canadian defence, allowing Ounahi to calmly score his second goal of the match.
