MP Alhassan Mumuni has rejected claims that Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie’s reference to Ghana’s previous eight years was necessarily a political attack on the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie made the comment during a September 2, 2026 working visit to the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), where he praised the institution’s performance.
He said: “Sometimes when we hear how well some state organisations are doing now, we wonder what we really have been doing in the past eight years and how Ghana could have
Mr Mumuni, however, said the context of the Chief Justice’s visit should be considered.
According to him, the Chief Justice had been briefed on the performance of the institution before making the comment.
“He had been briefed and they had given him performances year upon year, how they have come all the way to this point,” he said.
He argued that the Chief Justice was therefore commenting on the performance of the particular institution he had visited.
“He was speaking in respect of that institution, not in respect of governance as a general thing,” Hon. Mumuni said on Metro TV.
He also rejected the argument that the Chief Justice should avoid commenting on institutions simply because his remarks may make some political groups uncomfortable.
“It will also be very wrong for us to run a country or for institutions to function based on the comfort of other people,” he said.
The lawmake said the Chief Justice had previously criticised the current government on the galamsey issue, yet that did not automatically make the criticism a partisan political intervention.
He also argued that the Chief Justice has criticised the judiciary itself on issues including corruption perceptions and the backlog of cases.
“He has attacked his own institution on so many grounds. And so if he can attack his own institution, if he can speak about the ills or the weaknesses in his own institution, why can’t he talk same of other institutions?” he asked.
